Portis Game-Time Decision for Sunday
After suffering one of the most embarrassing losses in recent franchise history, the Redskins could be without their starting running back this weekend as they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
RB Clinton Portis sat out of practice Friday, resting a bruised calf that he sustained during the second half of last week’s 19-14 debacle against the Detroit Lions. Portis has also been dealing with bone spurs in both ankles, a problem that will likely debilitate him all season.
Redskins coach Jim Zorn made clear that Portis’ calf is the reason that Portis is a game-time decision, further saying he has a “50-50” chance of playing. Time to pick Ladell Betts off those fantasy football waiver wires.
Even if Portis does play, he’s started out of the gates excruciatingly slowly this year, with only 183 yards on 47 carries through the Redskins first three games.
Betts and Marcus Mason split first-team reps on Friday’s practice.
Luckily, with Josh Johnson starting at QB for the Buccaneers on Sunday, the Redskins might not need Portis and still could register an easy victory. Although, after last week’s calamity with the Lions, no Redskins fan would be happy to see Portis sitting on the bench on Sunday.
